Southwest Region University Transportation Centers Program
Established in 1987, the Southwest University Transportation Centers Program (SWUTC) administers the UTC program for Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The program oversight is shared between The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and Texas Southern University comprising the SWUTC consortium. Dr. Randy Machemehl directs The University of Texas at Austin research program component of Region Six SWUTC. Mr. Dock Burke directs the Texas A&M University component and Dr. C. Michael Walton directs the Advanced Institute educational component. Region Six SWUTC program focuses on our region's special transportation challenges.
The Southwest Region University Transportation Center (SWUTC) has conducted studies in sustainable transportation for mobility and economic strength, with projects associated with NAFTA and Texas-Mexico border crossing transportation issues.
The Southwest Region University Transportation Center is one of fourteen competitively selected centers of excellence established by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The center represents Region Six of the parent University Transportation Centers (UTC) program , which is a major national initiative designed to foster university-based, long-term research that encompasses all transportation modes, and to attract the nation's best students to the study of transportation.
