Southwest Region University Transportation Centers Program

Established in 1987, SWUTC is one of twenty-two competitively selected centers of excellence established by the USDOT. SWUTC represents Region Six of the parent University Transportation Centers (UTC) program, a major national initiative designed to foster university-based, long-term research of all transportation modes, and to attract the nation's best students to study transportation.

Dr. Randy Machemehl directs The University of Texas at Austin research program component of Region Six SWUTC and Dr. C. Michael Walton directs the Advanced Institute educational component. Mr. Dock Burke at Texas A&M University is the overall SWUTC director. The current theme and goal of the SWUTC program is sustainable transportation solutions to enhance economic prosperity and the quality of life. The SWUTC consortium includes The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Texas Southern University, Louisiana State University, and the University of New Orleans.
