Mr. Murphy is a Research Fellow at the Center for Transportation Research. He has over 25 years experience in highway design, pavement design and evaluation, non-destructive testing, super-heavy load analysis, load zone analysis and accelerated pavement testing. He worked for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for 8 years and completed a B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering at Oklahoma State University during the second four years while working at the ODOT design office on campus at OSU.
He began work with TxDOT in 1983 at the Wichita Falls District where he eventually supervised the Central Design Office. In 1989, he transferred to the Maintenance Division in Austin and began work on a Ph.D. at The University of Texas at Austin, focusing on network level testing with the Falling Weight Deflectometer. During his tenure with TxDOT he also worked in the Design and Construction Divisions and retired as Branch Manager of the Pavements and Materials Systems Branch.
Mike served 8 years as the Chairman of the TxDOT RMC-1 Pavements Research Technical Advisory Panel and 5 years as a member of TxDOT RMC-1 Pavements Research. He has served as Project Director or Program Coordinator on numerous TxDOT research projects.
Mike has also served on several national committees relating to pavements policy development and research including:
- AASHTO Joint Technical Committee on Pavements
- AASHTO Lead States Group - Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide
- LTPP TRB Expert Task Group on Pavement Analysis
- TRB Committee on Pavement Management
Mike began work with the Center for Transportation Research in 2007. His research interests include:
- Network-Level Pavement Management
- Highway Design and Evaluation
- Non-Destructive Testing
- Highway Safety
- Super Heavy and Load Zone Analysis
- Policies Regarding Truck Size and Weight and Impacts on Pavement Performance
