Undergraduate researchers at UT Austin will find many opportunities for funding and recognition. A number of awards and scholarships are listed below; consult your college and department for other possibilities.
University Co-operative Society Undergraduate Research Fellowship
Undergraduate Research Fellowships provide support (up to $1,000) for specific scholarly investigative projects conducted by University of Texas at Austin undergraduates. These fellowships are intended to cover costs associated with academic research projects proposed and written by student applicants and undertaken with the supervision of a University faculty member, lecturer, senior lecturer or full-time Research Scientist or Engineer.
University Co-op / George H. Mitchell Undergraduate Student Awards for Academic Excellence
The University of Texas at Austin, with the generous support of the University Co-op, will annually recognize nine UT undergraduates for superior scholarly or creative achievement.
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.
This is an annual national competition for graduating seniors and graduate students. Information booklets are available in the Study Abroad Office. Students must attend one of the special Fulbright information sessions to obtain an application. United States citizenship required.
International Education Fee Scholarship
This is a bi-annual local competition for study or research overseas. About two hundred scholarships are awarded annually. Awards are based both on merit and need.
Lora Romero Memorial Award for Interdisciplinary Research in Race, Ethnicity and Gender
The Lora Romero Memorial Award for Interdisciplinary Research in Race, Ethnicity and Gender is an annual award created in memory of former UT colleague, Lora Romero. One or two awards will be presented each spring, alternating between graduate and undergraduate student recipients. The award will honor and support students working in the area of gender studies and Chicano/a studies.
National Security Education Program
David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships
NSEP was established by the National Security Education Act of 1991, which created the National Security Education Board, the National Security Education Program, and a trust fund in the U.S. Treasury to provide resources for scholarships, fellowships and grants. It is guided by a mission that seeks to lead in development of the national capacity to educate U.S. citizens, understand foreign cultures, strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness, and enhance international cooperation and security.
Population Research Center REU Summer Institute in Minority Group Demography
Each year the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin hosts the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in Minority Group Demography. This ten-week summer program offers undergraduates with junior or senior standing the opportunity to study demography through course work on demographic methods and a research apprenticeship with a PRC faculty affiliate.
The Roy Crane Award in the Arts is given to a student of The University of Texas at Austin for unique, creative effort in the performing, literary and visual arts.
Senate of College Councils Undergraduate Research Award
The award seeks to encourage students to get involved in research early in their undergraduate experience. Eligible applicants include students assisting a faculty member on that faculty member's research project and students conducting independent research. One winner will receive a $1000 award from the Senate of College Councils.
Toxicology Short Term Research Training for Undergraduate Minority Students
The purpose of this training grant is to provide short-term research training in environmental toxicology and carcinogenesis for minority undergraduate students.
US-Mexico/Borderlands Student Research Awards
The UT College of Liberal Arts will present up to twenty $2,000 research awards for undergraduate and graduate students conducting research on US-Mexico/Borderlands issues. At least four of these awards will be reserved for students involved in research projects working closely with local communities or NGO's.
