Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Stacy Wolf
Research and Current ProjectsDr. Wolf’s current work expands her interest in performances of gender and sexuality in the American Broadway musical. Recent publications include “Something Better than This: Sweet Charity and the Feminist Utopia of Broadway Musicals” in Modern Drama (Summer 2004); and “We'll Always Be Bosom Buddies: Female Duets and the Queering of Broadway Musical Theatre” in GLQ (2006), which won the year’s award for Best Essay in Theatre Studies from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. Working with UndergraduatesDr. Wolf’s Plan II class encourages creative work and research in the area of musical theatre. She works closely with undergraduates and encourages them to think critically about theatre and the cultural contexts of performance. Several of Dr. Wolf’s students have received funding to travel to New York City for intensive archival research. She is committing to bridging the gap between scholarship and practice and bringing the creative impulse into research with the undergraduates she works with. (For more about her work with undergraduates, see the Eureka Student Spotlight on Stephanie Cantu). Advice for Undergraduates Interested in ResearchLike many of Theatre and Dance faculty members, Dr. Wolf is open to working with undergraduates on research projects. She encourages undergraduates to come talk with her or other faculty members if they are interested in research in creative activities. In theatre studies there is a tendency to neglect to examine musicals in a critical way. Working with Dr. Wolf, students can be on the cutting edge of research in musical theatre!
