Dr. White was born
in Dallas, Texas and received his Ph.D degree in 1982 from Yale University.
He moved to UT in 1996 from Oberlin College, where he was Professor
and Chair of the Department of Religion. He has also taught at Yale
University and The University of Indiana (Bloomington). His specialty is the Religions of the Roman Empire, focusing heavily on the social context of Jews and Christians in the Graeco-Roman period by blending historical, literary, and sociological research, with traditional biblical studies and archaological field work. Dr. White has published seven books, many articles, and abundant writings for reference works pertaining to his field. Recently he was featured in two award-winning PBS/Frontline documentaries, for which he also served as principal historical consultant and co-writer. The first was the four-hour From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians (1998), and the second was Apocalypse! Time, History, and Revolution (1999). At UT he teaches undergraduate courses on The Rise of Christianity, Jesus in History and Tradition, and Biblical Greek Literature. His graduate seminars are on Graeco-Roman culture and religion, ancient mystery cults, hellenistic moralists of the second sophistic, and archaeology and culture of Roman cities. Dr. White currently holds the Ronald Nelson Smith Chair in Classics and Christian Origins and is the Director of the Institute for the Study of Antiquity and Christian Origins (ISAC).
