Who we are
The Office of Industry Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin is a unit under the Office of the Vice President for Research established to further develop the University’s robust industry research enterprise. UT Austin is one of the most highly rated public research universities in the United States, and its research efforts consistently yield discoveries in emerging areas of science. UT Austin has a long history of forming alliances with industry around research initiatives leading to discoveries which benefit society. We invite you to join with us in continuing this tradition!
OIE coordinates with other campus units in order to facilitate research alliances with our industrial sponsors. OIE is a resource for the various schools and colleges to assist in establishing collaborative research around strategic technology initiatives. OIE works closely with the Office of Technology Commercialization to ensure smooth and fast transfer of intellectual property created by University research. OIE also works closely with the Office of Sponsored Projects on compliance and reporting issues related to university research activities. This cooperative approach enhances the opportunity for university-industry research to leverage the interests of industry and yield new technologies adding to the universal body of knowledge and benefitting society.
What we do
Collaborative research in a university setting can be a daunting process for both industry and university researchers. What are the university’s policies regarding interactions with industry sponsors? Are there industry constraints on research conducted in university labs? How do I determine the core research capabilities of the university? Is there a single point of contact that can help me determine whether collaborative research is a viable option? OIE functions as a resource to both faculty and industry seeking to form a long-term research alliance.
The OIE is charged with negotiating all UT Austin research contracts funded solely by private industry. The office endeavors to streamline the research agreement negotiations and assist UT faculty in their collaborative efforts with industry partners. We work with both faculty and industry researchers to enable innovative research alliances. Towards this end, UT Austin has executed research agreements with over 2,700 companies worldwide.
