Emerging Technology Fund Update
Nov. 18, 2005
Colleagues,
The information below is provided in order to keep you up to date on the funding opportunities related to the Texas Emerging Technology Fund (ETF). Although details on the submission process, including deadlines, are still sketchy, I want to inform you the Governor’s office has requested that all proposals related to the ETF be routed through UT System. I ask that if you are planning to submit a proposal under the program (more details below), you route your submission through my office. We will ensure that all proposals reach the cognizant office at UT System for submission to the Governor’s office.
As you may know, the ETF provides for the creation of Regional Centers of Innovation and Commercialization (RCICís) and provides funding for emerging technology projects, attracting research teams to Texas, and research grant matching. In addition, a statewide center of innovation and commercialization (SCIC) for biotechnology and life science proposals is being established that will be located in Austin. The programs under the Texas Emerging Technology Fund are described at http://www.governor.state.tx.us/divisions/ecodev/etf/.
As you prepare your proposal for emerging technology projects, please keep in mind that priority shall be given to proposals that:
- involve emerging scientific or technical fields that have a reasonable probability of enhancing this state's national and global economic competitiveness;
- may result in a medical or scientific breakthrough;
- are collaborative;
- are matched with other available funds; and
- have a demonstrable economic development benefit to the state.
In awarding money for research grant matching, priority shall be given to projects that:
- Address federal or other major sponsors priorities in emerging scientific or technology fields;
- Are interdisciplinary;
- Are collaborative with a combination or public or private institutions in the state;
- Are likely to result in a medical or scientific breakthrough; and
- Have a demonstrable economic benefit to the state.
We will continue to provide periodic updates on the program as it unveils. If you have questions, please contact Connie Brownson at connie.brownson@mail.utexas.edu or 512-471-2877.
