National Academy of Engineering Honors Peppas with Founders Award
The National Academy of Engineering has selected Nicholas Peppas as its 2012 Founders Award recipient in recognition of his pioneering work in the areas of polymer chemistry, bioengineering, pharmaceutical sciences and advanced drug delivery.
Peppas is the chair of the Cockrell School of Engineering Biomedical Engineering Department, and he holds the Fletcher Stuckey Pratt Chair in Engineering with additional appointments in Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin. He is believed to be the first faculty member from a Texas university to receive the prestigious award since its inception in 1966. The award is given to one NAE member annually who has made a substantial impact on the engineering profession.

(Andrea Gore, a professor in the College of Pharmacy, added the perspective from her research to an article about the influence of BPA in birth defects and miscarriages.)
That could limit the number of viable eggs, impairing fertility, (Patricia) Hunt says. BPA can affect multiple generations simultaneously, says Andrea Gore, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Texas at Austin. That's because BPA can affect a pregnant mother; her unborn fetus; and, if that fetus is female, the fetus' future offspring, who will develop from her eggs.
Research Project
RESEARCHER: James Chelikowsky, director of the Center for Computational Materials within the university’s Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences.
AGENCY: Department of Energy
AMOUNT: $6.2 million
Researchers will develop computer software to design and discover materials for low-cost energy applications. Potential uses include economical battery materials to capture solar energy and materials that convert water to hydrogen using sunlight.
The wide range of materials problems associated with energy-related applications requires a team of physical scientists, materials engineers, computer scientists and applied mathematicians. This diverse research team will develop and implement scalable, open-source codes to be used across the scientific community.
