It's Not Exactly Rocket Science
Discover.com Blog
Nov. 15, 2010
HEADLINE: Evolutionary trees help to convict men who knowingly infected women with HIV
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2010/11/15/evolutionary-trees-help-to-convict-men-who-knowingly-infected-women-with-hiv/
(A paper co-authored by David Hillis, professor of Integrative Biology, detailed how he and colleagues from the Baylor College of Medicine used evolution to confirm of the identities of two men who had spread HIV. In this comment to the science blog, It's Not Exactly Rocket Science, Hillis says that the method has to be used with caution.)

They also have to be used very carefully. For a start, you need to set out with a clear hypothesis to test. “It would be inappropriate, for example, to simply look for close matches among an open database of HIV sequences,” says Hillis, because you might miss out go-betweens in a chain of infection – people who passed the virus between those involved in a case.

MAMMALIAN MITOCHONDRIAL ONE-CARBON METABOLISM

RESEARCHER: Dean Appling, professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, principal investigator
AGENCY: National Institutes of Health
AMOUNT: $313,640

The goal of this project is to study two human genes involved in folic acid metabolism in mitochondria, and to learn how defects in these genes contribute to human disease. The information gained from these studies will fill a huge gap in our understanding of folic acid metabolism, and may ultimately suggest better treatments for human disorders such as cardiovascular disease and neural tube defects.
