HEADLINE: New Species Of Extinct Giant Penguin Discovered
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130268514
(Julia Clarke, an associate professor in the Jackson School of Geosciences, talked to Science Friday host Ira Flatow about the discovery of a giant penguin fossil in Peru. Of particular interest was evidence found about the color of its feathers, which suggested that the penguin was a more casual dresser than today's penguins.)

Prof. CLARKE: Well, the coloration - we've been able to map color for parts of the flipper and some of the body feathers. So what we've been able to determine is that a reddish-brown coloration is supported for the underside of the wing, and a gray tone on the leading edge of the wing, and that some of the body feathers that we have also yield support for a reddish-brown coloration.

The thing we don't know is exactly where on the body these body feathers would have been from. So was the animal dominantly reddish-brown, or did it have -was the gray on the wing carried up onto the body to make it sort of half and half? You know, those are questions we still don't know the answers to.

Cosmic Reionization and its Feedback Effect on Galaxy Formation

RESEARCHER: Paul Shapiro, professor, Department of Astronomy
AGENCY: National Science Foundation
AMOUNT: $309,984

The aim of this project is to investigate the Epoch of Reionization (EOR) in the history of the universe via simulations of cosmological radiative transfer and N-body/gas dynamics. This will address frontier problems in the theory of reionization and its feedback on galaxy formation in the Cold Dark Matter model, in order to predict observable signatures. These will include predictions for the redshifted 21-cm background from the cosmic "Dark Ages" and the EOR, an area of great current observational interest.

Broader impacts of the work include training of undergraduate and graduate students, and participation of individuals from underrepresented groups.
