Subvention Grants Program

In this era when university libraries are buying fewer books, university and other scholarly presses often demand that authors provide funds to underwrite the publication of scholarly monographs and books. The reason that such fees—called “subventions”—are required is that press runs are often quite small and very expensive. In spring 1997, a generous gift from the University Co-operative Society established the University Co-operative Society Subvention Grants program to assist University of Texas at Austin authors publish manuscripts requiring subventions.

Faculty authors (including tenured and tenure-track faculty, senior lecturers and lecturers) and members of the research staff (Code 1000) are invited to submit their manuscripts. New faculty and assistant professors are strongly encouraged to participate. Publications can be in any language and any discipline. Please note: Textbooks will not be supported. The only exception to this rule may be highly specialized texts for very advanced students that are being published by nonprofit presses.

Deadline: Awards are ongoing until available funds are expended.

To APPLY for a Subvention Grant, authors should submit the following items:

  1. Manuscript
  2. Curriculum Vita
  3. Pre-publication reviews (at least two)
  4. Formal letter of acceptance from a publisher
  5. A statement by the publisher that a subvention of a specific amount is required and justification for that amount
  6. Evidence that the author has attempted to secure other funding sources of support for the subvention (e.g., the author’s professorship, discretionary funds available to the author’s chair or dean, etc.).

There is no “application form” for this award competition. Authors should submit the items listed above with a cover letter to:
