Biographical Sketch
Dr. Hitoshi Morikawa earned his M.D. at Kyoto University in Japan in 1990. After completing his clinical training as an anesthesiologist at Kyoto University Hospital and Ohtsu Municipal Hospital, Dr. Morikawa began his graduate studies and received his Ph.D. in Medical Science (Anesthesiology) from Kyoto University in 1999. His research focused on morphine and other opioids as analgesic drugs, specifically the cellular mechanism of tolerance after prolonged treatment with opioids. He served as Instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Kyoto University Hospital from 1997-1999. He joined Dr. John Williams´ lab at the Vollum Institute at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon, as a research fellow in 1999 to define the brain circuit involved in the euphoric action of drugs of abuse. Dr. Morikawa joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 2002, expanding his research to the alcohol field.
