Weather, Cowboys and Wind Energy on Tap for Discussion Group

By Dick Furlong

September 24, 2008 Tom Yura, director of our regional National Weather Service office in New Braunfels, spoke.

October 29, 2008 our speaker was Davis Ford, a prominent environmental engineer and frustrated cowboy.  He told usabout his book "The Last Cowboy" that continues to sell rather well.  I read the book about a year ago, and it is a good read.

Our speaker for April was unable to re-schedule a medical procedure in order to meet with us.  He will be asked to try again November 26, 2008 to lead what I expect to be a lively discussion on Wind Energy.  (Should we invite Boone Pickens to join us?)

Last February, Christine Schmidt spoke about Bio-engineering and current UT research to improve adaptations for manufactured substances to avoid rejection by human systems.

Last March, Tom Greene spoke about the Texas navy, specifically how privateers helped Sam Houston's army at San Jacinto and later, during the War Between the States, smuggling arms and supplies through the Union blockade of Texas ports.
