Medical Examinations

  1. Employees assigned to asbestos removal will be given medical examinations at University expense in compliance with 29 CFR 1926.1101 and 40 CFR 763 - Subpart G.
    1. Within 30 days of first employment or assignment to a job exposing the employee to asbestos containing material.
    2. Annually.
    3. Within 30 days of termination of employment.
  2. Medical examination for employees assigned to asbestos removal will include:
    1. Medical and work history with special emphasis directed to symptoms of the respiratory system, cardiovascular system and digestive tract.
    2. Medical questionnaire contained in 29 CFR 1926.1101.
    3. A physical examination including a chest roentgenogram and pulmonary function test that includes measurement of the employee's forced vital capacity and expiratory volume at 1 second.
  3. No employee shall be assigned to tasks requiring the use of respirators if an examining physician determines the employee will be unable to function normally while using it or that the employee might otherwise be impaired.
  4. Records of all physical examinations performed for asbestos work related activities will be maintained for 30 years by the medical organization contracted by the University, the Consultant, and the Director of the employee's assigned department.
  5. The Consultant will track and schedule medical examinations for employees assigned to asbestos abatement projects. The Consultant will inform the shop supervisor and employee in writing as to the date, time, and location of the medical examination and submit all paperwork.
  6. The shop supervisor of the employee is responsible for transportation of employees assigned to asbestos abatement projects to the medical center where the physical examinations are scheduled.
