In case of an emergency, you must have a reliable, clean source of water available to rinse your eyes. The eyewash in your lab must be tested monthly to ensure a clean source of water and a properly functioning eyewash. Do the following each month:
- Activate the eyewash and let the water run for at least 3 minutes to flush out impurities, e.g., rust and bacteria. Be sure to put a bucket under the eyewash if it is not drained.
- Look for problems with the operation of the eyewash, such as low water pressure or no water at all. If problems are noted, contact your Zone Maintenance Shop. Call 471-7221 for your Zone Maintenance Shop phone number.
- Record the test date and initials of the person testing the eyewash. Call EH&S at 471-3511 for a tag that can be attached to the eyewash. This tag can be used to record the testing information. Instead of the tag, you can keep a logbook to record the testing information, but the logbook needs to be clearly labeled and readily accessible.
Note: We will check for eyewash testing records and will credit labs accordingly during our routine lab inspections.
