Introduction

The University of Texas at Austin is concerned about the safety and health of its students, faculty, and staff. The University also complies with applicable federal, state, and local environmental health and safety regulations. To ensure the safety of employees who work in laboratories, the University requires training. Training is provided through Environmental Health and Safety and is provided by your supervisors.

The information in this guide will assist you in identifying the safety courses you are required to take if you work in a laboratory setting. As an employee of The University of Texas at Austin, you are responsible for following the environmental health and safety policies established by The University to ensure your safety as well as the safety of coworkers, students, and members of the University community.

Definitions

For your purposes in using this guide, "laboratory employees" are defined as faculty, staff, and employed students who work in a laboratory setting where hazardous chemicals or biological materials are used. For your purposes in using this guide, the term "laboratory employees" also includes graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scientists who work in laboratories.

How to Use This Guide

  1. Locate the page of this guide containing the training worksheet.

    Laboratory employees go to Page 7 for Lab Employee Training Worksheet.
    Students (not employed) go to Page 6 for Lab Student Training Worksheet.

    You may use the training worksheet to record courses you need as you go through the guide.

  2. Go to the appropriate page to determine which courses you are required to take.

    Laboratory employees go to Page 3, 4 and 5.
    Students (not employed) go to Page 6.

  3. Record the required courses on your training worksheet. Laboratory employees be sure to review both General and Function-Specific training requirements.
  4. Refer to the EH&S Homepage at http://www.utexas.edu/business/oehs or call Environmental Health and Safety (471-7137) for a schedule of courses.
  5. Use your completed training worksheet as a reference to ensure you enroll and attend all required training courses.

General Training for Lab Employees

Environmental Health and Safety Courses

OH 101 General Hazard Communication 1 hour NOW AVAILABLE: Online
This training is required by the Texas Hazard Communication Act. Topics include container labels and material safety data sheets, safe handling of workplace chemicals, proper use of personal protective equipment, and first-aid and emergency procedures. Required.

OH 201 Laboratory Safety 2 hours NOW AVAILABLE: Online
Topics include safety equipment and safe work practices, emergency procedures and equipment, chemical storage guidelines, and spill kit demonstration and general disposal procedures. This training must be received within 30 days of laboratory assignment. Required.

OH 205 Fire Extinguisher Use 1 hour
This training familiarizes participants with the general principles of portable fire extinguisher use. Participants practice by applying their training on a controlled fire. All laboratory employees must receive this training within 30 days of laboratory assignment. Required.

Laboratory Principal Investigator or Supervisor

OH 102 Site-Specific Hazard Communication varies
This training provides additional information on chemical hazards in a specified laboratory and is taught by the laboratory's principal investigator or supervisor. Required.

Function-Specific Training for Lab Employees

Note: Be sure to review the list on Page 3 for required General Training before reviewing this page.

University policy requires you to take additional training if you perform any of the functions listed below. Review this list and mark the corresponding training courses. Record this information on the "Lab Employee Training Worksheet."

Do you perform the following functions?

___ Are you designated as laboratory representative to manage chemical waste? (Each lab group must have at least one person perform this function.)

OH 202 Chemical Waste Management 2 hours
Training covers regulated wastes in the laboratory setting and provides simple, less expensive methods for handling wastes.

___ Do you work with infectious agents?

OH 207 Biological Safety 1 hour
Topics include the hazards of working with infectious agents, practices and equipment required for work at different biosafety levels, and spill clean-up procedures. This training must be received within 30 days of laboratory assignment.

___ Do you work with human blood or tissues?

OH 208 Bloodborne Pathogens 1 hour
Topics include the hazards of working in labs with human blood or tissue, the definition of bloodborne pathogens, methods for preventing exposure, and spill clean-up procedures. This training must be received within 30 days of laboratory assignment.

___ Do you work in an environment where an air-purifying respirator (hazardous concentration of airborne contaminants) is required?

OH 216 Respiratory Fit-Testing 1 hour
Topics include how to put on and adjust a respirator, importance of maintaining a good fit, and proper care and maintenance. Participants will select a respirator and be fit-tested to ensure the respirator fits properly.

___ Do you use radioactive materials or use radiation producing machines?

OH 301 Basic Radiological Health 8 hours
Topics include hazards of using radiation, safe lab practices, and procedures to follow if an accident occurs. (If you have taken a comparable course at another institution, you may be exempt. Call 471-3511 if you have questions.)

___ Do you prepare or ship hazardous materials regulated by the Department of Transportation?

OH 500 DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation 8 hours
This course trains, tests, and certifies persons who prepare or ship hazardous materials. Topics include awareness, safety, and specifics such as packaging, marking, and labeling of the hazardous material to ensure it is safe for transport.

OH 301 Basic Radiological Health 8 hours
Topics include hazards of using radiation, safe lab practices, and procedures to follow if an accident occurs. This training is provided by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.

___ Are you enrolled in an individual instruction course?

OH 102 Site Specific Hazard Communication varies
This training provides information on chemical hazards in the laboratory. This training is provided by the laboratory's principal investigator or supervisor.
