community in New Orleans discussion
October 11, 2005
EVENT: The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for African and African American Studies, the Performance as Public Practice program and the Humanities Institute are co-sponsoring an all-day forum titled “New Orleans: Reflections on an Ongoing Crisis.” The forum will provide an interactive opportunity for university and community groups to analyze and discuss the implications of Hurricane Katrina, including the disaster itself, dispersal of victims and the new kinds of community created as a result. The event is free and open to the public. A catered, New Orleans-style lunch will be provided.
WHEN: 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31.
WHERE: ACES Building 2.302, Avaya Auditorium. Maps of campus are available online.
BACKGROUND: The forum will cover a series of topics, ranging from the history and political climate of New Orleans to the experiences of flood victims and evacuees to the current and future struggles of the city. Each discussion segment will begin with an art piece or performance, followed by two presentations by members of the campus and local communities. The moderator will then open the floor to discussion. Read more about the New Orleans forum and the event schedule.
