Free summer movie series spotlights Russian youth culture

The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies is sponsoring a weekly summer movie series that will explore the lives of Russia’s youth. The series begins with the Gorbachev era and continues to the present day. Admission for all movies is free and open to the public.

The films will be screened at 7 p.m., every Wednesday from June 15 to Aug. 17 in Parlin Hall, Room 201. Maps of campus are available online.

This summer film series will be presented in Russian with English subtitles. Films include:

  • “Scarecrow” (“Chuchelo”), June 15. A young girl must deal with cruel classmates (1985).
  • “The Burglar” (“Vzlomshchik”), June 22. Coming of age in Leningrad during Perestroika, a young man and his brother explore the underground rock scene (1987).
  • “Is it Easy to Be Young?” (“Legko li byt’ molodym?”), June 29. Portrayal of rebellious teenagers growing up under Communist rule in Latvia (1987).
  • “My Name is Harlequin” (“Menya zovut Arlekino”), July 6. Members of a suburban neo-fascist gang must face the realities of Gorbachev’s Russia (1988).
  • “Little Vera” (“Malenkaya Vera”), July 13. The rebellious title character must deal with coming of age in a turbulent time, confronting shortages, alcoholism and a sense of social drift (1988).
  • “Luna Park” (“Luna Park”), July 20. Two young men struggle to find their true identities after discovering they might be related. A tragi-comedy (1990).
  • “The Needle” (“Igla”), July 27. This film stars the famous tragic rock star Victor Tsoi. The hero tries to save his girlfriend from drug addiction, but runs into trouble with the local Mafia (1990).
  • “Land of the Deaf” (“Strana Glukhikh”), August 3. Two young women, one deaf, become involved with rival Mafia gangs (1997).
  • “Let’s Make Love” (“Zaimyomsya Lyubovyu”), August 10. A teen comic melodrama about one young man’s search for love (2002).
  • “The Book Stealers” (“Pokhititeli Knig”), August 17. An urban fantasy. A girl and her three friends steal books in order to find the perfect story (2003).
