White House conference on helping America’s youth to be
simulcast to The University of Texas at Austin’s ACES Building

EVENT: The White House Conference on Helping America’s Youth will be simulcast to The University of Texas at Austin, which has been designated as the site in Texas for viewing the conference hosted at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Admission to the Austin viewing site is free and open to the public. The conference will include remarks by President Bush, First Lady Laura Bush, cabinet secretaries and speakers addressing issues including: Challenges Facing Our Youth; Research Based Solutions to Our Challenges; Unveiling the Community Assessment Guide; Connecting with Family; Connecting with School and Connecting with Community. Participants in Austin and other remote sites will be able to hear from panels of researchers and practitioners who will discuss these topic areas from a national and local community perspective. Remote sites also will have the capability to e-mail questions and observations directly to the conference.

WHEN: The simulcast to Austin will be Thursday, Oct. 27. The pre-program will begin at 8 a.m. (Central Daylight Time). The program is scheduled for 8:20 a.m. (CDT) with welcome remarks by H. Patrick Swygert, president of Howard University. The conference is scheduled to end at about 4 p.m. (CDT).

WHERE: The simulcast will be in AVAYA Auditorium 2.302 in the Applied Computational Engineering and Sciences Building (ACES), corner of 24th and Speedway Streets. Maps of campus are available online.

PARKING: Public parking is available at various garages on campus, including the San Jacinto Garage, 2401 San Jacinto Boulevard and the Speedway Garage, 105 E. 27th St.

BACKGROUND: On Oct. 27, First Lady Laura Bush will convene the first-ever White House Conference on Helping America’s Youth. The conference will promote public awareness of the various problems facing at-risk youth in our nation, and it will bring together policymakers, research experts, foundations, faith-based and volunteer organizations, educators, coaches and parents to share examples of what is already working to make a difference in the lives of young Americans, and to generate new ideas that can be used across the country.
