Tower lights honor Nobel Prize winner, alumnus J.M. Coetzee

The University of Texas at Austin Tower lights will honor Nobel Prize winner and alumnus J.M. Coetzee. The Swedish Academy in Stockholm announced today (Oct. 2) that Coetzee, who received his Ph.D. in English in 1969 from the university, has been awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Coetzee was the first writer to win the prestigious Booker Prize twice, first for “Life and Times of Michael K” in 1983 and again in 1999 for “Disgrace.” His other novels include “The Master of Petersburg,” “Age of Iron” and “Foe.” He was recognized in 2001 by the university’s Graduate School with the Outstanding Alumnus Award.

This evening the Tower will be lighted with an orange shaft and white top.
