Application Process
Admission to the Ph.D. program is competitive and early application is encouraged. Application to the Ph.D. program requires admission to both the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin and the School of Social Work. In order to be considered for admission, you must complete the on-line application.
In order to apply for Graduate school admission you must complete materials for the Graduate and International Admissions Center. Questions regarding Graduate School admission should be directed to (512) 475-7390 or visit graduate admissions on the Web at www.utexas.edu/student/giac. Send only the materials listed below to the Graduate School:
- $50.00 non-refundable application fee - Make checks payable to UT-Austin.
- One official copy of each of your transcripts - Include transcripts for all college coursework. If currently enrolled in a degree seeking program, final transcripts indicating degree award need to be forwarded to the Graduate School as soon as available.
- One official copy of your GRE score report - When taking the GRE General Test, have your score report sent to the University of Texas at Austin. Additional score reports can be requested by calling ETS at 1-888-GRE-SCORE. (Please note that the Electronic Testing System (ETS) will not report GRE scores completed over five years ago.)
Dates and Deadlines
The priority deadline for submitting application materials for fall admission to the School is December 15. The Admission Committee begins the review of applications at that time and continues until the incoming cohort is full. The School is not obligated to review applicant files that are not complete by the priority deadline.
Requirements for International Students
For admission to the Graduate School, international students must complete the Application for Students from Other Countries; provide information regarding immigration status; complete certification of financial responsibility; pay a non-refundable application fee of $75.00; and provide an official copy of the Test of English as a Foreign Language-Internet Based Test (TOEFL-IBT) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score report.

To apply to the Social Work Ph.D. Program, applicants must submit an online application to the School of Social Work which includes:
- A personal narrative statement, as directed in the School of Social Work Application
- One copy of publication or other written documents which are representative of academic or professional work
- Letters of Reference (3 required; 5 preferred) should be submitted in sealed envelopes bearing the writer's signature across the seal. References from professors, employers, and professionals in human service agencies are particularly appropriate. Reference Forms must be signed and returned with Letters of Reference, even if the writer uses separate letterhead stationery. It is the applicant's responsibility to distribute and collect Reference Forms and letters.
