About the School
Established by constitutional mandate in 1876, the University of Texas at Austin is the largest academic component of the University of Texas System and one of the top-ranked major research institutions in the country. Located near the state capitol in the heart of the beautiful Central Texas Hill Country, UT-Austin is home to more than 49,000 students, including about 12,000 students enrolled in 90 different graduate programs and professional schools. The University has available some of the most extensive university research facilities in the United States, including the fifth-largest academic library and comprehensive academic computing resources.
The School of Social Work offers programs leading to the BSW, MSSW and Ph.D. degrees. The BSW and MSSW programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the accrediting organization for undergraduate and master's level professional social work education. Social work is a profession that provides the opportunity for service to individuals, families, and communities in a variety of diverse settings. Many individuals enter the profession because of the broad spectrum of career opportunities in settings such as private agencies, hospitals, schools, private practice, and local, state and federal government agencies including the legislature. Bachelor's level social workers find careers such as caseworkers, school social workers, probation officers, community organizers, or program directors. Master's level social workers have a variety of job titles, including agency director, clinical therapist, crisis intervention counselor, trainer/consultant, geriatric specialist, program developer, policyanalyst, and program administrator. For those who pursue a Ph.D. in social work, opportunities abound in academia, social research, and private practice.
