Academics

The School offers programs leading to the Bachelor’s in Social Work (BSW), Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW), and PhD in Social Work degrees.

Our distinguished faculty is one of the most diverse in the university, with a wide range of expertise in many topics including mental illness, substance abuse, health behavior interventions, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, child welfare, aging, grief and loss, and juvenile justice.

Our Bachelor’s program combines liberal arts with social work classes to prepare individuals for entry into direct human service  professional positions. BSW students can take advantage of all the university-wide and community activities, and at the same time enjoy the benefits of a small program that provides a great deal of personal attention. Learn about BSW admissions here.

Our Master’s program prepares students for advanced social work practice  with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. MSSW students take a foundation curriculum followed by a sequence of courses in one of two areas of concentration: Clinical Social Work or Community and Administrative Leadership. For interested students we offer five dual-degree master’s programs in social work and divinity, public health, public affairs, jurisprudence, and Latin American studies. Learn about MSSW admissions here.

Our Ph.d. program offers a wealth of opportunities for graduate students to become involved in ongoing applied research and training projects across a wide range of areas. The School’s nationally recognized Center for Social Work Research has created close ties with local and state service organizations, thus facilitating student research opportunities. Our graduates are well placed in academia and social and behavioral health sciences research. Learn about Ph.D. admissions here.

Our Field Education program provide an intensive learning experience for BSW and MSSW students, allowing them to build, apply and integrate knowledge from all areas of the curriculum within a practice setting. The program has placement settings in Austin, in-state, out-of-state, and in international locations.
