Caregiver Status and Designated Vendor Evaluation

Principal Investigator:
Laura Lein, Ph.D.

Duration: 93 - 95

The Center for Social Work Research has just completed a project on the status of child caregivers and educators in Texas, for the Texas Department of Human Services (TDHS). TDHS was particularly interested in the working conditions of those working with young children, their training and education, and their level of skills. Over a two-year period, the Center completed a series of interviews with child care and education staff in a range of settings including: Texas Head Start and Migrant Head Starts, public Pre-Kindergartens, licensed day care centers, registered family day care homes, and nursery school programs. Staff working conditions, as well as staff training and education, varied considerably among these different types of programs. Pay levels, availability of benefits, teacher turnover, access to training and development all differed significantly among the programs. A full report on this project is nearly completed.
