City of Austin Police Department Cadet Training

Principal Investigator:
Michael Lauderdale, Ph.D.

Duration: 1/1/99 - ongoing

The City of Austin Police Department contracted with Michael Lauderdale for the development and implementation of an innovative training for members of the newest cadet class. This includes introducing issues of cultural diversity, interacting with the community, and responsible policing. This training is designed to assist the cadets in their problem solving skills while working with the diverse Austin population. A total of 133 cadets participated in two 4-day training seminars conducted in the summer of 1999. The program highlighted special issues and sponsored panel discussions on various ethnic and cultural groups, role-playing, and experimental activities to give insight into specific relations with the police and the communities they serve.
