What Starts Here Changes the World. The School of Social Work is central to this theme at The University of Texas at Austin, a university with vast impact and a tradition of intellectual leadership that transforms lives on a grand scale.
Since 1950, students from all over the world have come to the School of Social Work to seek challenges and prepare themselves to make this world a better place. Our students are involved in more than 400 public and private agencies that serve Texans. And each year, social work students in field internships provide nearly 200,000 hours of service to communities in Central Texas, across the United States, and internationally on six continents.
Enrollment in the School’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs—BSW, MSSW, PhD—has increased by 35 percent during the past 10 years to more than 800 students, and growth is expected to continue during the next two decades.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) reports employment of social workers is expected to increase by 22 percent during the 2006-2016 decade, a rate faster than the average for all U.S. occupations.
