United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
The School of Social Work has maintained a graduate internship program with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva Switzerland for 20 years. Initially established by Dr. Joseph Heffernan with the Community Development, Gender Equity & Children Section, the school has placed second-year MSSW students from the Community and Administrative Leadership (CAL) concentration in this internship every spring semester since 1993. In that time, 22 students have completed their final block internship in the Community Development section. The current faculty liaison for this internship, Dr. Cal Streeter, assumed responsibility for the internship in 1999 and has worked in recent years to increase internship option with UNHCR. In 2010, the internship program was expanded, with 2 students being placed with the UNHCR Field office in Yerevan, Armenia. In 2011, a student was placed for the first time in the UNHCR Staff Welfare Unit in Geneva, UNHCR’s Employee Assistance Program. These internship options provide students with an exciting educational experience working to help develop global refugee services and supporting field staff working in crisis situations all over the world.
