“Public’s Attitude Toward Juveniles Who Commit Crimes: The Relationship Between Assessments of Adolescent Development and Attitudes Toward Severity of Punishment,” by guest lecturer Dr. Terrence T. Allen, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Juvenile Justice at the Social Work Department of North Carolina Central University.

The study examined the link between assessments of child and adolescent development and attitudes toward the appropriate level of punishment for juveniles, particularly juveniles who have committed homicide or assisted homicide. Using representative statewide survey data, multivariate analytic techniques were employed to investigate the extent to which a set of measures assessing youth maturity and responsibility were associated with a set of variables that measured how harshly juveniles should be treated by the justice system.
