Alan Silverman (MSSW ’80) has over 35 years of international experience in the United Nations and international environment.  From 2002 until 2010, he served as Senior Learning Strategy Advisor for UNAIDS, the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS. In this capacity, he launched a global strategy to build the competence of UN system staff to respond to HIV.  His work included the design of learning programs on HIV-related stigma and discrimination as well as stigma and discrimination related to sexuality. He led an interagency team to build the capacity of UN teams at country level to address the HIV issues related to key populations: men who have sex with men, people who use drugs and sex workers. Prior to joining UNAIDS, Alan worked for 22 years with UNICEF in New York, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Since retiring from the UN system, he has undertaken consultancies for UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNFPA, UN DESA as well as several NGOs, including ‘Live Out Loud’, a US-based NGO that works with LGBT youth and the YMCA. He is a Board member for “Development in Gardening,” an NGO that works on improving the nutritional well-being of people living with and affected by HIV in Africa as well as LGBT RPCV, a national organization for returned LGBT Peace Corps volunteers. Alan received his MSSW from UT Austin with a focus on social planning and program development.

This event is co-sponsored by the School of Social Work International Committee.
