Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
Dr. Allan Hugh Cole Jr. is Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. Previously, he served on the faculty and administration of Austin Seminary for eleven years, the last four as Academic Dean.
His research interests include psychosocial development of boys and men, mentoring, fatherhood, social work and religion/spirituality, anxiety disorders, bereavement, and organizational leadership.
Cole is author or editor of ten books. These include: Converging Horizons: Essays in Psychology, Religion, and Caregiving (Cascade, 2015); The Faith and Friendships of Teenage Boys (Westminster John Knox Press, 2012) (coauthored with Robert C. Dykstra and Donald Capps); A Spiritual Life: Perspectives from Poets, Prophets, and Preachers (Westminster John Knox Press, 2011); Good Mourning: Getting through Your Grief (Westminster John Knox Press, 2008); Be Not Anxious: Pastoral Care of Disquieted Souls (Eerdmans, 2008); and Losers, Loners, and Rebels: The Spiritual Struggles of Boys (Westminster John Knox Press, 2007)(coauthored with Robert C. Dykstra and Donald Capps).
Cole is also the author of various chapters, articles, and reviews in volumes and journals related to the fields of social work and the psychology of religion. He is the founding and current editor of the Journal of Childhood and Religion (www.childhoodandreligion.com). He also serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Spirituality and Religion in Social Work: Social Thought.
