Barbara L. Jones, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Assistant Dean for Health Affairs, and Co-Director for The Institute for Grief, Loss, and Family Survival

Dr. Barbara Jones is Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Institute for Grief, Loss, and Family Survival in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin, where she also holds a courtesy appointment with the Center for Women and Gender Studies. She is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at University of Texas Galveston Medical School, Collaborating Faculty member at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio and Research Consultant at Dell Children’s Medical Center.

Dr. Jones’ research focuses on improving care for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and their families. She teaches courses across the curriculum on topics such as grief and loss, social work in health care, psychosocial oncology and interprofessional education (IPE).

Originally from New York, Dr. Jones’ clinical experience has been primarily in the fields of pediatric oncology, children’s grief and loss, pediatric palliative and end-of-life care, adolescent and young adult oncology, grief, trauma, and survival. Her current research focuses on coordinated care for children facing illness, family resilience, pediatric palliative care, pediatric oncology social work interventions, and adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors.

Dr. Jones serves in a number of national leadership roles in pediatric oncology, palliative care, AYA oncology, and interprofessional and social work education including:

  • Board Member of the Social Work Hospice/ Palliative Care Network (SWHPN)

Dr. Jones has received national awards for her work in oncology and palliative care including the 2014 American Psychosocial Oncology Society Outstanding Training and Education Award, the 2013 Social Worker of the Year from the Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers, and the 2009 Project on Death in America Social Work Leadership Award. She has also received awards for her teaching such as the 2014 University of Texas Dads’ Centennial Teaching Fellowship Award and the 2004-05 Lora Lee Pederson Teaching Excellence Award from the UT School of Social Work.

Dr. Jones is committed to improving the quality of life for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer and their families through community-based practice research, education, and advocacy.
