Vicki Y. Packheiser

Clinical Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs

Vicki Packheiser is the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs and a Clinical Associate Professor.  She has been on the faculty of the UT School of Social Work since 1994.  Prior to coming to UT, Vicki taught at Austin Community College and was an Assistant Professor at Illinois State University. She is a 2008 graduate of the “Courage to Teach” and “Courage to Lead” programs sponsored by the Center for Courage and Renewal and the Fetzer Institute and a recipient of the Lora Lee Pederson Teaching Excellence Award.

Vicki was originally from Illinois, receiving her MSW from the University of Illinois and a B.S. in Social Work and Psychology from Illinois State University. She has over 30 years of clinical social work experience in a variety of mental health settings including children’s service coordinator and child abuse and neglect program coordinator for a community mental health center, marriage and family counselor for a family counseling center, program counselor for a psychiatric hospital and clinical social worker for a psychiatric practice.  She has maintained her own private practice in the provision of psychotherapy, clinical supervision, consultation and training since 1989.

In addition to her clinical work, Vicki is an experienced trainer who has provided numerous presentations for organizations at the local, state and national level including:  Protective Services Training Institute, National Corrective Training Institute, Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, Tracor, 3M Corporation, American Heart Association, Americorps, Seton Hospital Social Workers, Circle of Life Hospice/Odyssey Healthcare, American Cancer Society, VA Hospitals in Fort Hood, Temple and San Antonio, Project Transitions, Any Baby Can, Girling Health Care, Texas Association of Real Estate Inspectors, Institute of Noetic Sciences, Hispanic Mother Daughter Program, Lifeworks, CPS Regions 5 and 7, CEACO, Austin Grief and Loss Providers, Hospice Austin, Fairbury Hospital, Austin ISD, Leander ISD, Round Rock ISD, Austin Travis County MHMR, Texas Pharmacy Association, Austin Widowed Persons Support Group, AMOM, ACT Women, Texas Baptist Children’s Home, New Life Alliance, Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, UT School of Nursing, UT School of Social Work Field Instructors’ Workshops, UT School of Social Work Continuing Education Program, UT School of Social Work Center for Social Work Research and UT Graduate Coordinators.

Vicki has 18 years of experience in field education as a faculty liaison and field instructor for social work students in their field placements.  She has also served as the field instructor for VSA Arts of Texas.  She is particularly interested in international field education and has been the faculty liaison for international field placements in Spain, Mexico, Dubai and Costa Rica.

Vicki has been a consultant for the Institute for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Resiliency Project, a federal grant awarded by the Office of Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs and the US Department of Justice.  She has also worked as a research assistant for the restorative justice research project “ Mechanisms of Action in Bridges to Life” with Dr. Marilyn Armour.

A passionate professional interest of Vicki’s is the importance of creativity in social work practice.  She has provided over 25 conference presentations on creativity for the National Association of Social Workers, Texas School Social Workers, Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, Society for Spirituality and Social Work, Texas Families, Texas Association of Home Care, Regional Network for Children, Texas Network of Youth Services, Summit on Neurobiology of Addictions and the Austin Grief and Loss Conference.

Vicki is licensed by the State of Texas as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is an approved LCSW supervisor.  She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Academy of Certified Social Workers, the Council on Social Work Education, the Association of Baccalaureate Program Directors and Phi Alpha National Honor Society.  She also serves as a mental health volunteer for the local Red Cross.
