About
Dr. Jemel Aguilar is an Assistant Professor in the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work and is also affiliated faculty in the Center for Women and Gender Studies at the University. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota School of Social Work, where he focused on researching adolescent violence. Dr. Aguilar also completed his Masters of Social Work at the University of Minnesota where he focused on clinical and community practice with children and adolescents.
Dr. Aguilar is originally from New York City, where he started his social work career in the field of HIV prevention and intervention. Dr. Aguilar also practiced social work in the field of corrections, child welfare, and mental health. Dr. Aguilar's research and practice interests include serious and violent juvenile delinquency, interventions in low-income communities of color, and community influences on mental health.
Dr. Aguilar teaches masters courses in the Community and Administrative Leadership (CAL) concentration. Most recently, he taught Dynamics of Communities and Organizations and Advanced Research in Community Practice.
