About
Kathy Armenta, LCSW, ACSW, is a Clinical Associate Professor with The University of Texas at Austin, School of Social Work. She teaches graduate courses in Practice I and II, Social Change and Community Practice, School-based Social Services and Methods of Play Intervention courses, as well as serves a Faculty Liaison to agency field settings. She is a member of the Cultural Diversity Institute and provides professional trainings for institutions, organizations and groups. Her professional interests are in the areas of resiliency, cultural competency, school social work, women's issues, group work, social action, experiential learning, team building, Field Instruction, and interventions with play.
Professor Armenta has also worked as a school social worker for Round Rock I.S.D. in Austin, Texas, developing the first comprehensive school social work program in an elementary setting for that district. Additionally, in her over thirty years of professional social work practice, Armenta has worked in several community and non-profit agencies in both Arizona and Texas. She has provided staff development training and workshops for over three decades for agencies and organizations on topics of parenting, developing cultural competency, stress management, group and team building, marital and family communication, assertiveness and leadership, developing resiliency skills and creating a caring climate. Armenta currently serves as Chairperson for the Texas State School Social Work Conference and serves on the Community Council of the Community Action Network in Austin and the MHMR Network Advisory Council. Additionally, she also serves on the advisory boards for several social service agencies and provides clinical supervision to practitioners seeking the LCSW certification.
Kathy Armenta is licensed by the State of Texas as a Licensed Master Social Worker-Advanced Clinical Practitioner. She is certified by NASW as a School Social Work Specialist. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Academy of Certified Social Workers, the Social Welfare Action Alliance, , the Association for Community Organization and Social Administration, and the Association of Latinos in Social Work. Armenta was selected as the "Social Worker of the Year, l996" by the Austin Unit of NASW and as the "Field Instructor of the Year, l996" by UT Austin School of Social Work. She was, along with a fellow colleague, awarded the MSW faculty national award, "Influencing State Policy", for innovative teaching in the area of policy and social action. Ms. Armenta is a graduate of the 2003 Leadership Austin cohort.
Kathy Armenta completed her undergraduate work in 1970 at The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona and her graduate work in 1973 at Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona. Professor Armenta is married with two grown children. Her interests include gardening, reading, guitar, traveling and being a life-long learner.
