About

Dr. Dawnovise Fowler is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to this position, Dr. Fowler completed a post-doctoral fellowship with a minority supplement to the School of Social Work's National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded Substance Abuse Research Development Program.

Dr. Fowler was born in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Spelman College. After college, Dr. Fowler returned to Chicago where she received her Master of Arts from the School of Social Service Administration at The University of Chicago. Her practice experience has included child welfare, family counseling, school social work, and work with women survivors of trauma. After working for child welfare agencies in Illinois, Dr. Fowler relocated to Washington, DC with her husband, Richard M. Fowler V, where she received her Ph.D. in social work from Howard University. Dr. Fowler gained valuable research experience as a doctoral student during her three-year tenure as a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)/National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH) Minority Research Fellow.

Dr. Fowler conducts research on women survivors of intimate partner abuse as an underserved population with unique service needs, untapped resourcefulness, and phenomenal resiliency. She is currently conducting promising research on the implementation of substance abuse intervention in domestic violence shelters for women partner abuse survivors. Other areas of research interest include: mental health and substance abuse for underserved populations, spirituality, cultural resiliency, and social justice. Dr. Fowler was a 2003 seed grant recipient from the UT-Austin Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (IDVSA) to study spirituality among women partner abuse survivors. She served as a 2004-2005 Faculty Fellow for the Center for Women's and Gender Studies. Dr. Fowler is currently a Faculty Affiliate for the Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) and IDVSA.

Dr. Fowler has authored articles on mental health, spirituality and women survivors of partner abuse, race/ethnic differences in dually diagnosed women, and African American social work leadership. Dr. Fowler has taught Health and Welfare for African Americans and Human Behavior and the Social Environment at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level, Dr. Fowler teaches Basic Dynamics of Individuals and Families, Foundations of Social Justice: Values, Diversity, Power, and Oppression, and Cultural Factors in Chemical Dependency Treatment for Underserved Populations.

Dr. Fowler and her husband, Rick, have two daughters, Jiya and Zoelle. Dr. Fowler enjoys spending time with her family and step-aerobics.
