Professional Interests

Core research focus is in the area of health disparities in relation to socio-political, cultural and structural factors. Specific, narrowed inquiry is in the investigation of mental health and health associated with the intersection between intimate partner abuse (IPA) and the heightened risk for HIV/AIDS, in addition to the examination of development and evaluation of evidence-based HIV/AIDS interventions and prevention strategies tailored to women and communities of color.

Education

  • Ph.D., Arizona State University

Scholarly Activity

With a solid mix of clinical, administrative and research experience, Dr. Rountree has had a background in studying the complex interplay of social, cultural, political and economic factors as determinants for women's heightened risk for experiencing IPA and sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Specifically, her research has explored whether domestic violence shelters in two southwestern regions assessed a women's risk for HIV/AIDS and provided educational/prevention programming to clients. From this research, Dr. Rountree has published articles in peer reviewed journals. She has co-written a book chapter currently in print on the best practices in working with HIV affected and infected incarcerated women. In addition, she has participated as a co-investigator in a study that examined HIV/AIDS prevention among African American male and female college students attending a historically Black southern university. This study has been published in a recognized peer reviewed journal. Dr. Rountree has had an opportunity to present her research at both local and national conferences.

As a principal investigator for a Center for Health Promotion and Disease funded grant, operating under a P30 center grant awarded by the National Institute for Nursing Research (NINR) from the UT School of Nursing, Dr. Rountree received $20,000 to develop a HIV/AIDS secondary prevention intervention for women who have experienced IPA. In addition she received a NIDA faculty seed grant to evaluate the intervention. She received a $5,000 research study grant from the Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Center for Social Work Research, UT School of Social Work that funded two research projects related to the co-occurring service delivery needs of women who are in domestic violence shelters. A research stipend from the Center for Women's and Gender Studies has assisted her in furthering research interests in the area of health promotion and disease prevention.

Dr. Rountree teaches in the Community and Administrative Leadership concentration of the School of Social Work that includes teaching courses in the dynamics of organizations and communities, foundations for social justice and strategic partnerships and collaborative leadership.
