Professional Interests

Evidence-based practice, treatment of traumatized populations, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, research methods, program evaluation, and severe and persistent mental illness.

Education

About

Dr. Rubin hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After receiving his Master in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh he directed an outreach mental health program for adolescents at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, where he also provided family therapy and trained lay mental health counselors. After receiving his Ph.D. (also from the University of Pittsburgh), he directed national research projects at the Council on Social Work Education in New York City. After joining the faculty at The University of Texas, he has authored or co-authored over 100 publications in diverse areas such as EMDR, chronic mental illness, substance abuse, child welfare and others. His main interest is in evaluating the effectiveness of clinical interventions. He is the lead author of a best selling research textbook, Research Methods for Social Work, that has been adopted by approximately 40 percent of schools of social work since 1989 and which is in its fifth edition. He has also authored or co-authored numerous additional books in the areas of mental health, statistics and others. He has served as an editorial reviewer for 14 professional journals. He was elected vice president of the Society for Social Work and Research in 1996, and then elected as president in 1998.

Dr. Rubin teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods and clinical practice evaluation, and has recently begun teaching a course on the Assessment and Treatment of Traumatized Populations. Dr. Rubin has received two teaching excellence awards. Several dissertations that he has supervised have been honored by The University of Texas in their annual university-wide dissertation awards. In 1997 an article he co-authored won the Society for Social Work and Research Award for Outstanding Examples of Published Research. In 1993 he received the University of Pittsburgh, School of Social Work's Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Dr. Rubin and his wife, Chris are avid tennis and Scrabble players and have three grown children.
