School of Social Work Alumni Reception, May 6; Dan Adams to Receive Distinguished Alumnus Award

AUSTIN, Texas - Dean Barbara W. White invites alumni, faculty and friends of the School of Social Work to the annual alumni reception co-hosted by the school's alumni organization, the Social Work Alumni Network (SWAN).

The reception will be held Wednesday, May 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Serrano's Café and Cantina at 1111 Red River Street in Austin.

Dan Adams '91 Alumnus

An evening highlight will be the presentation of the school's Charles I. Wright Distinguished Alumni Award to 2009 recipient Dan Adams, M.S.S.W '91. Adams has served as president and CEO of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, and the Cal Farley's Boys Ranch Foundation since 2005. Adams joined the Cal Farley organization in 1996 as a program administrator. Prior to that, he worked for 12 years at the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, Texas. Adams also serves on the board of the Texas Alliance for Children and Family Services headquartered in Austin. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos.

Adams continues to support the School of the Social Work as an alumnus. He is a member of the school's Advisory Council and has also co-sponsored the Texas School Social Work Conference hosted by the School of Social Work Office of Professional Development.

Each year, the SWAN Board of Directors selects one from among its many distinguished alumni to recognize for outstanding achievements. One of the nomination letters for Adams stated: "Dan's authentic caring and Texas charm along with his hard work all make him one of the most effective social workers I have been privileged to know. He is constantly looking for ways to contribute to the School of Social Work and the profession."

Established in 1989, the award is named in recognition of its first recipient, Charles I. Wright, M.S.S.W. '61. Wright, retired and living in Alpine, Texas, served for many years as director of the Texas Baptist Children's Home in Round Rock, Texas, and is a long-time supporter of the School of Social Work.
