May 6, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas - An "Advanced Motivational Interviewing" workshop offered through The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work Office of Professional Development will be held May 13 from 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. at Austin Recovery at 8402 Cross Park Drive.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a state-of-the-art, evidence-based counseling method designed for evoking intrinsic motivation for positive behavior change. Originally developed in the drug and alcohol field, MI is now being widely applied in a variety of settings, including health care, mental health, public health, and criminal justice.
This workshop will be at the advanced level and is designed for clinicians who have already received introductory training in MI. There will be an emphasis on higher level reflective listening, handling resistance, and recognizing and reinforcing "change talk." The use of MI in group settings will be discussed. This workshop will be very interactive and practice-oriented. Participants will be guided through a sequence of learning activities to further develop and refine their MI skills.
