NYU's Dr. Carol Tosone to Deliver Fairbanks Lecture in Psychoanalytic Knowledge
August 22, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas - The School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin will host the inaugural Sue Fairbanks Lecture in Psychoanalytic Knowledge, Friday, September 18, 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. in the school's UTOPIA Theatre.
Dr. Carol Tosone, Associate Professor, New York University Silver School of Social Work, will present "Psychoanalytic Theory in a New Key: Implications for Contemporary Social Work Practice." Tosone is a Distinguished Scholar in Social Work in the National Academies of Practice in Washington, D.C. She completed her psychoanalytic training at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health in New York City where she was the recipient of the Postgraduate Memorial Award.
Dr. Carol Tosone
Prior to her appointment at NYU, Tosone was Assistant Professor of Social Work in Psychiatry at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Clinical Social Work Journal.
Tosone's presentation will challenge the commonly held notion that psychoanalytic theory is outdated and not relevant to contemporary social work practice. Recent advances in attachment theory and research as well as neuroscience will be applied to the understanding of populations at-risk, particularly survivors of trauma. Additionally, the timelessness and significance of core psychodynamic constructs such as transference, countertransference, projective identification, and resistance will be demonstrated through the use of a videotaped reenactment of a client-clinician session, followed by a psychoanalytically-oriented supervisory session.
The lecture series is made possible by the Sue Fairbanks Endowment for Excellence in the Application of Psychoanalytic Knowledge in Social Work established in 2007. This permanent endowment is dedicated to educational programs in psychoanalytic knowledge and to promoting excellence in clinical practice.
Sue Fairbanks is a 1981 graduate of the MSSW program at The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work. Since 1986, she has maintained a full-time private practice in Austin with adults in individual and couples therapy and provided clinical consultation and supervision.
