Audrey Sherman Selected to Receive Gosnell Scholarship

AUSTIN, Texas - Audrey Sherman, a graduate student in the MSSW program at The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, has been selected to receive the 2009-2010 Consuelo W. Gosnell Scholarship from the National Association of Social Workers Foundation. Sherman's scholarship award is $2,000.

The Gosnell Scholarships are awarded to master's degree candidates in social work who have demonstrated a commitment to working with American Indian/Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino populations, or in public and voluntary nonprofit agency settings.

Sherman is a student in the MSSW program's Community and Administrative Leadership Concentration (CAL). The CAL concentration teaches cross-cutting knowledge and skills that prepare students for macro practice as master's level social workers in community, administrative and policy practice settings.

Sherman's social work interest is with Latino issues, specifically immigration, international social work in Latin America, and displaced persons. Sherman worked in Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador and has studied abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Sherman's experience includes volunteering at Casa Marianella, which provides shelter and services to immigrants from Central America in Austin, and in Casa Marianella's family program, Posada Esperanza. She has also worked at People's Community Clinic, a non-profit health clinic that serves Austin's under served poor, the majority of whom are Latino. Sherman currently participates in the Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition.

"Audrey is one of only ten students nationwide to receive this very competitive and prestigious award," said Clinical Professor and MSSW Program Director Jane Kretzschmar. "I am pleased that the NASW Foundation has once again recognized and supported a student from our program."
