AUSTIN, Texas – The School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin will host the school’s First Annual Social Justice Week, to be held October 17-21, 2011.
The Dean’s Advisory Committee on Social Justice (DACSJ), the Social Justice Action Coalition, a student organization affiliated with the school; and the school’s Disability Visibility Committee have collaboratively planned a number of exciting activities and learning experiences. DACSJ is co-chaired by Social Work faculty member Dr. Michele Rountree and graduate students Isabel Casas and Jen Scott, MSSW.
The week’s events are crafted to provide opportunities for School of Social Work students, faculty and staff to continue building their capacities in the areas of diversity and social justice.
“I am excited about Social Justice Week because of the vast array of events that we will be hosting and the diverse participation from students, faculty and community members,” said graduate student and events planning volunteer Gemma Mears.
“This week will feature creative dance, poetry, and art performances, interactive activism events, lectures, films, food and fun. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about social justice topics and meet people active in the Austin social justice community,” said Mears.
The following is a schedule of events planned for the week of October 17-21. All events will be held in the School of Social Work UTOPIA Theatre unless otherwise noted.
