Oct. 3: Research Brown Bag with Dean Zayas – ‘Understanding the Suicide Attempts of Young Latinas’

AUSTIN, Texas – Luis H. Zayas, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin, will present at the “Research Brown Bag” Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the school’s Room 2.132.

In his presentation, “Understanding the Suicide Attempts of Young Latinas: Background and Findings,” Dean Zayas will describe the history of the phenomenon of suicide attempts among teenage Latinas and how cultural and developmental factors converge to influence the youth.  He will then present findings from his NIMH-funded, mixed-method study comparing Latinas with a history of suicide attempts to Latinas without any suicidal history, and their parents.

Zayas’ research and clinical practice has focused on minority families and their children, mental health, childrearing, and family functioning.
