Student Organizations
The School is home to a number of different Student Organizations.
The Social Work Council
Comprised of both undergraduate and graduate social work students, the Social Work Council is the student government organization for the School of Social Work. The Council is part of the Cabinet of College Councils and receives some financial support from the University. Through the Council, students can plan and participate in social, educational and community activities as well as join committees that help to shape academic policies at the School. The National Association of Social Workers at The University of Texas at Austin
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest professioal organization of social workers, comprised of over 155,000 members throughout the U.S. NASW "promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers... seeks to enhance the effective functioning and well-being of individuals, families, and communities through its work and through its advocacy". The organization has several program goals including strengthening professional standards, providing practice advancement, as well as education and action regarding social policy.
The Social Welfare Action Alliance - Austin Chapter
The Social Welfare Action Alliance (SWAA) is a national association of progressive human service practitioners, students, educators and consumers. This society was founded in 1985 to honor the progressive work of Bertha Capen Reynolds, a premier author, educator, and social activist of the mid-20th century. The School has supported efforts of the Austin Chapter, which focuses on advancing a progressive social welfare agenda through involvement of students and community members.
The National Association of Black Social Workers
The National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW) was formed in response to issues related to providing human services in the Black community, educating social workers for effective service in the Black community, and providing opportunities for participation of Black social workers in the social welfare arena.
Reach OUT! Shout OUT!
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally student group is a collection of students that sponsor educational and social events for and about the LGBT community.
The Alliance for Social Work Students of Color
The Alliance for Social Work Students of Color (ASSC) offers support and advocates for students of color enrolled in the School of Social Work.
Phi-Alpha Honor Society
The Phi Alpha Honor Society provides a bond among students of social work and promotes humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work.
Dean's Ambassadors for Social Work
The Dean's Ambassadors for Social Work are a select group of student representatives from all academic programs who show an active desire to help in school recruitment efforts. These students are leaders in the School who share their experiences with prospective students, offer tours, and assist with special events.
Alliance for Christian Social Workers
The Alliance for Christian Social Workers is a non-denominational Christian group formed so that Christians in the School of Social Work may find fellowship and friendship with those that share similar religious ideals.
