Current MSSW Students' Musings

One thing that makes The University of Texas School of Social Work so unique is the quality of its students, many of whom were in your shoes a year ago. Below, current students have offered their perspective on school, life in Austin, and their social work interests.
Why UT School of Social Work?
"I chose the school for a few of reasons. First, I was familiar and impressed with the reputation and program ranking. However, I also appreciated the staff that I came in contact with during the application process." - Andrea Gonzalez
"I was intrigued by the possibility of going abroad for my final field placement. Also, I felt very welcomed by students and staff during my visit to the school. It felt like home!" - Anna Bauer
What makes Austin special, or um, WEIRD?
"It's really amazing! I love it! It feels like home. It's an active, vibrant, and energetic town with lots of young people and always something going on." - Britt Urban
"I love living in Austin. It is such a unique city with its own personality. There is always so much to do… I am also very involved in the activism community, and Austin has many protests and rallies to attend on most weekends." - Melissa Nygren
"Austin is a wonderful experience and truly upholds the saying "Keep Austin Weird." Austin is a place that can be used as a catalyst for change, especially being the state capitol." - Tiffany Curtis
What are your areas of interest?
"I worked at an adoption agency in Dallas before pursuing my master's. I became familiar with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and gained invaluable client/work experience. After I graduate, I plan to work for CPS and stay in the adoption field or work with youth in some capacity." - Stephanie Holmes
"I worked for two years outside of Boston, MA as a home visitor for low-income families with infants and toddlers, educating and supporting them in healthy parenting, early childhood development, health, nutrition, and social services. After graduation, I plan to work in an agency that specializes in gerontology. I hope to explore grief and loss, bereavement, life review, long-term care, and hospice." - Elizabeth Wilson
