Ashley Buenrostro (left), a senior public relations student in the College of Communication, spent the summer interning at the Country Music Association in Nashville, Tenn. Buenrostro was one of five undergraduates to receive a stipend from the College’s Wofford Denius Music Industry Internship Grant Program, which supports students pursuing music industry internships in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Atlanta and Nashville. Ashley BuenrostroMy internship at the Country Music Association has been rewarding in so many ways. Not only have I gained valuable experience in the music industry and in public relations, but I also have contributed to a great cause.

One of CMA’s main initiatives, “Keep the Music Playing,” has completely transformed many of Metro Nashville Public Schools’ music education programs. Half of the proceeds from the annual CMA Music Festival are donated to these schools, providing students with thousands of new instruments. These funds provide the young performers with valuable resources and opportunities, and they give them the chance to follow any dreams they have in music.

In the Communications/Media Relations department, I have assisted in many efforts toward obtaining media coverage for CMA and the festival. This includes drafting and editing press releases, monitoring TV/print/online media coverage and organizing and distributing media credentials. During the festival, we also maintained the media wing of the stadium where the nightly concerts took place, and we organized all of the artists’ interviews and press conference appearances.

By obtaining media coverage and creating buzz around the annual festival, not only is CMA advancing and promoting country music and its artists, but they also are maintaining an audience that will continue to attend CMA Fest over the years and contribute to their cause. It is a great feeling to leave work each day and know that my efforts, no matter how small, play a role in carrying out CMA’s inspiring vision and endeavors.
