History and Purpose

The aBroadly Speaking team came together for the first time in 2005 to promote study abroad opportunities for minority groups. At the University of Texas at Austin, these minority groups include not only racial minorities but also students from colleges underrepresented in study abroad. The goal is to bring the student body knowledge about the benefits of studying in other countries to gain a new perspective that they would otherwise not have.

Every year the Study Abroad Office sends thousands of students abroad, and our team would like to encourage even more to go out and explore new turf. Different kinds of programs are available each year in many places around the globe. No matter what your interests may be for study abroad. With all the opportunities present to study abroad, the aBroadly Speaking team wishes to inform all students that no matter what their major may be that study abroad is a realistic and affordable option.
Tasks of the aBroadly Speaking team includes annual magazine publications, student interviews, annual photo contests, webpage management and outside promotional activities. Our team works to find all sources of media to display the experiences of others who have studied abroad in order to help persuade new students to do the same. In addition to our goals and efforts to get other students to go abroad, we have all been abroad to countries in South America, Asia and Europe. With our experiences and work in the Study Abroad Office, we act as study abroad mentors as well answering questions prospective study abroad students may have.
