National Scholarships for Study Abroad

The following scholarships are offered by national organizations and can be used toward study abroad at UT

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program

  • Students must be currently receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application
  • Students cannot be studying abroad in Cuba or in a nation currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning

  • Students must be U.S. citizens
  • Deadlines: Fall/Academic Year - April 4, Spring - September 19 (no summer awards)
  • Amount: Up to $5,000 for semester or academic-year study abroad
  • Additional Information: Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. This program enables students who have limited financial means to participate in study abroad opportunities worldwide

  • NSEP-David Boren Scholarships

  • Every student studying outside of Europe or Australia should research this grant
  • UT Campus Deadline for Undergraduates: usually mid January each year
  • U.S. citizenship required

  • Undergraduate

    NSEP was designed to provide U.S. undergraduates with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experience in countries and areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation. The Study Abroad Office holds information sessions for undergraduates beginning in November of each year. Amount: max $10,000 (see website for specifics www.iie.org/programs/nsep/undergraduate/default.htm)

    Graduate

    Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. national security but are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students, i.e. areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.     National Flagship Language Initiative

  • The National Flagship Language Program (NFLP) was developed to address the urgent and growing need for Americans with professional levels of competency in languages critical to national security. NFLP offers advanced language training in Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Persian, and Russian. NFLP is designed to train participants to reach professional working proficiency in a target language. NSEP(above) offers a limited number of fellowships to qualified American students interested in receiving full financial support to participate in one of the NFLP programs.

  • Rotary

  • www.rotary.org
  • National competitions administered by local clubs of Rotary International. Awards for 3-month, 6-month, or multiple year study. For information and applications call one of the Austin clubs as well as any that may be in your home town and state. The Austin Club can be reached at 462-1334.
  • Deadlines are approximately 18 months prior to award, in April prior to award.
  • Ambassadorial Scholarships
  • Peace and conflict resolution fellowships


  • IIE Fulbright

  • Graduating seniors can apply for study or research after graduation from college
  • Graduate students can apply to fund research projects

  • The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

  • Open to both members of the Honor Society and non-members in all fields of study
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 and a minimum of 56 hours but no more than 90 semester hours at the time of application
  • Deadline is February 15 for any program that has not been completed by July 1
