Welcome to the Parents page for SAO at UT Austin. This section of our web site has been designed to help parents understand the step-by-step process of study abroad at the University of Texas. It is also includes useful information about the stages of adjustment which students encounter while abroad.

The University of Texas believes that each student is ultimately responsible for his or her experience abroad. This encompasses a wide range of responsibilities from personal safet and completing paperwork, to being a responsible representative of UT and the United States. SAO is here to guide your son or daughter through the process. Your support throughout the entire process is extremely important as well. Your son or daughter is embarking on an incredible journey rich in personal, professional, and academic rewards that will last a lifetime.

Step-by-Step Process to Study Abroad at UT

  1. All students must attend an information session. Students will learn the about different program opportunities, credit, funding and the application process.
  2. Students can research programs on the web with our searchable database and in the resource library in our office.
  3. After researching programs students meet with a Study Abroad advisor. Advisors will help students decide on a program, discuss the program in more depth, review funding and scholarships, discuss courses and credit, and start the student on the application process.
  4. The application deadlines:
    • Maymesters: November 1
    • Summer: February 15
    • Fall: March 1
    • Spring: October
  5. Applications are reviewed, and students are notified of their acceptance status via mail or e-mail around mid-April/ mid-November.
  6. Once accepted, student must attend a country specific orientation and complete online modules.
  7. While abroad students will remain in contact with SAO. Students will also have a contact at their study abroad program.
  8. Upon return, students are expected to check in with SAO. Students credit will not be processed and grades will not be posted until the student completes all re-entry requirements.

Steps Parents Can Take To Ensure The Safety Of Their Student:

  1. Have a valid passport
  2. Purchase flexible tickets
  3. Have son or daughter leave itinerary and contact information
  4. Monitor State Department and program providers websites
  5. Consider funding an international cell phone
