Computer Sciences introduces Turing Scholar Program
In fall 2002, the Department of Computer Sciences will launch a new undergraduate honors program for incoming freshmen.
This program, known as the Turing Scholars Program, is designed to develop the academic and industrial leaders of
tomorrow by offering the following opportunities:
- An intensive, accelerated path through the core curriculum within the freshman year.
- A sophomore class that exposes students to significant concepts that are often not encountered until graduate school.
- Special honors sections of many upper-division computer sciences (CS) classes.
- A special sophomore class that introduces students to the department's research activities.
- Opportunities to get involved in research as early as the junior year.
In addition to the new curriculum, this program offers the following benefits:
- Direct admission to the CS major, skipping the
pre-CS major that is required of others.
- Close interaction with other students on the same fast track.
- One-on-one interaction with our world-class faculty.
- Priority registration for CS courses.
- Increased visibility to industrial and academic recruiters.
We expect to admit about 50 students to this program for fall 2002 (in addition to the approximately 450 who will
be admitted to the regular pre-CS major as freshmen). Although some students may be admitted to the Turing Scholars
program after their freshman year, we encourage high school students to apply so that they can participate in the
specially designed freshman-year program.
The deadline for applying for the first class, entering fall 2002, is February 1, 2002. For more information, contact:
